Description
To consult means "seek advice from," as in seek advice from an accountant, attorney, or other expert. An expert, meanwhile, is someone who is "very skillful; having much training and knowledge in a special field." Therefore, a consultant is someone who acquires knowledge and skill from experiences in a given subject matter then provides advice on that topic or field to paying clients.
There are many types of consultants, just as there are accountants and attorneys. A strategic consultant may evaluate a business plan and help the client develop a plan to meet those strategic goals. A client concerned with government regulations and risk mitigation may engage a regulatory compliance consultant. And a company looking to improve its systems may engage a process consultant to examine their immediate business or technology needs and recommend products, services, or other solutions that can address them.
Consultants often talk in terms of the current vs. future state or the "As" vs. the "To Be". This terminology is used to indicate the difference in the state of the business or a given process, department, market position etc. before and after the consultant advices the client. The delta between the As Is and To Be state is the change brought about by the consultant and is the value they deliver for the service fees they charge. In the end, the goal of a consultant is to help the client identify and execute the appropriate change based upon their experiences and expertise in a given field.
